                              MUNICIPAL SOLID WASTE COMPOSITION    

 

 In Indian MSW there is more percentage of   compostable material   equal amount of ash and fine materials and very small amount goes for recycling.  In the waste composition, the organic matter was found  to be 41% and this statistics was found remain constant for   past three  decades. The recyclable have increased from 9.56 % to 17.18%.

  Carbonaceous material contains Nitrogen, Phosphorous and Potassium. Plastic was found to increase from 0.69 to 3.9% within twenty years. According to the study if the carbonaceous material is lost, then it is equivalent to loss of 6.58, 3.63 and 3.44 tonnes of Nitrogen, Phosphorous and Potassium respectively.

  Calorific value of MSW of Manipur, Calcutta and Nagpur was found to be 800, 1504 and 1178 Kcal and density varied from 330 to 500 g/m3. In the municipal solid waste of Mysore city, 79.25% was compostable material during festival days, 76% during non-working days and 66.5% during working days.

            The calorific value of MSW is 5431.18 Kj/Kg. Solid waste generates in the

        Jammu contained 70.09% of biodegradable waste and 29.91% non-biodegradable.

Physical Components  Value  

The major  component of the solid waste in Pondicherry is organic matter that constitutes around 40%. The other components present in the waste stream include soil matter, metals, plastics, papers etc. The rag pickers collect most of the valuable recyclables to be sold to the junk dealers. The major non-compostable or non-recyclable residues in the waste stream are plastic carry bags and disposable teacups that have less or almost no value for recycling.
